I was very much in favor of your letter to the editor in The Independent on Aug. 8, 2006.
I have lived in Elmhurst since I was 5 years old. My parents owned 4 different houses in 4 different areas of Elmhurst and we purchased a house 18 months after we were married in 1966. Then we paid $106.00 a month for mortgage, taxes and insurance. I was scared to death we would not be able to keep up the payments. We all ready had a 7 month old and hoped for more children. As was the norm, I stayed home, and took care of the house and children.
Now 40 years later and with my husband retired, I put away $350.00 out of each his social security and pension checks a month for taxes and insurance and wonder if that will be enough.
Our children will never live in the town they grew up in and I don't want to move because they live in Berkeley, Villa Park and Unincorporated Wheaton.
We are lucky that we have not had any teardowns on our block, but the one the corner is going to be and they are planning on putting up a $1,650,000 house with a 2 car detached garage and 3 car attached garage. The ad also says elegant curb appeal. It's facing a street that doesn't even have curbs.
As a business owner in Elmhurst for 21 years, I have many customers come in that have moved away because of the high cost of taxes and don't like the teardowns. One lady said she called the mayor to complain, he told her to move if she didn't like progress.
I also wonder how it looks to prospective buyers to see all the vacant new houses in the town.
